Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Kajal,
I am so happy to hear that you want to go camping this summer! It is your very first time, so I am glad you asked for my advice.
I think you will love camping because you enjoy being outdoors. It is a great way to relax and see beautiful views. You can sit by the campire, look at the stares at night, and enjoy the quiet nature away from the loud city. It is very peaceful.
However, there are a few small downsides to think about before you go. The weather can change very fast, and it might rain unexpectedly. Sleeping on the hard ground in a small tent can also be uncomfortable. Plus, you will have to deal with many bugs and cook all your meals outside.
I would really love to go camping with you this summer. I can help you set up the tent and show you how to pack the right gear. It will be a lot of fun to share this adventure together!
Your friend,
Prapti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
Your response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a natural and friendly manner. You clearly explain why your friend Kajal would enjoy camping by pointing out her love for the outdoors, beautiful views, and peaceful nature. You also thoroughly describe potential disadvantages, such as unpredictable weather, hard ground, bugs, and outdoor cooking. Finally, you explicitly confirm your willingness to go camping together and offer helpful assistance with gear. All bullet points are fully covered, and your ideas are extended and supported well with relevant details. To move towards the highest bands, you could deepen your reflections slightly, perhaps by adding more nuanced insight into the camping experience, though your current coverage easily satisfies the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a warm, appropriate greeting and an opening that sets the context, followed by distinct paragraphs dedicated to the benefits of camping, the disadvantages, and your enthusiasm for joining the trip. You use cohesive devices and referencing naturally, such as 'However' to transition smoothly into the drawbacks and 'Plus' to add further details. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader effortlessly from one point to the next. To achieve an even higher level, you could experiment with a wider variety of sophisticated linking phrases, ensuring that cohesion remains entirely unobtrusive while handling more complex relationships between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms such as 'unexpectedly', 'downside', and 'adventure'. Your writing is easy to understand, and you make valid attempts at less common vocabulary. However, there are a few minor spelling slips, such as 'campire' instead of 'campfire' and 'stares' instead of 'stars', which point to a need for more careful proofreading. Your word choices are generally appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, but to reach a higher lexical band, you should incorporate a wider variety of precise collocations and less common idiomatic expressions, while entirely eliminating simple mechanical spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully integrating a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. Your letter features frequent error-free sentences, such as 'It is a great way to relax and see beautiful views' and 'The weather can change very fast, and it might rain unexpectedly.' Verb tenses and subject-verb agreement are handled accurately throughout. A few minor slips occur, but they do not impede communication. To push towards a higher band with a wider range of structures, you could incorporate more advanced grammatical patterns, such as conditional clauses or inverted structures, while maintaining this strong level of overall accuracy and punctuation control.
