Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear James,
I hope you are doing well. It is good to hear that you are planning to go on a camping holiday this summer. I am happy to share few suggestions that may help you in planning a successful trip.
I believe camping would help you to recharge and relax, giving you break from your busy work schedule. I think you are going to like this trip as you are one who prefer to stay close to the nature. It would help you in developing and learning the basic survival skills by disconnecting you from the modern and city comfort. However, the possible drawbacks are uncertain weather and less connectivity to the emergency services.
I would be happy to join you for camping, but I have to prepare for my university exams which is in 3 weeks. Unfortunately, I would not be able to join this time, but I promise to plan a trip together next summer.
I hope this helps. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Ravi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a natural and friendly tone appropriate for a letter to a friend. You clearly cover why James would enjoy camping, such as helping him to recharge and relax away from a busy work schedule. You also appropriately describe potential disadvantages like uncertain weather and limited connectivity to emergency services, and you provide a clear reason why you cannot join him this summer due to upcoming university exams. The ideas are generally well extended and supported, though some points, such as the survival skills aspect, remain slightly generalised. To reach a higher level, the ideas could be developed with slightly more specific detail or elaboration to ensure every bullet point is fully explored with rich context.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged in a coherent sequence, moving smoothly from the opening greetings and purpose of the letter to the reasons for camping, the disadvantages, and finally the explanation about joining him. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct topic or set of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Unfortunately', and 'In addition' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the text, although slightly more varied referencing or advanced transition phrases would be needed to push towards a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'recharge and relax', 'survival skills', and 'emergency services'. There is a clear attempt to use functional phrases suited to informal correspondence. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as writing 'share few suggestions' (which is missing the article 'a') and 'one who prefer' (subject-verb agreement error with 'prefers'), as well as minor stylistic awkwardness like 'city comfort' instead of 'city comforts'. These occasional errors in word choice and phrasing show that while the vocabulary is broad enough to communicate effectively, greater precision is needed for top-tier bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating a strong command of grammar and punctuation overall. You successfully use subordinate clauses, such as 'giving you break from your busy work schedule' and 'as you are one who prefer to stay close to the nature'. There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few minor slips such as missing articles ('giving you *a* break') and a pluralisation/agreement mismatch ('my university exams which *is* in 3 weeks' instead of *are*). Control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is generally sound, supporting clear communication without impeding the reader's understanding.
