Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Samar,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing in response to your letter regarding the camping in summer holidays. I am glad to hear that this time you showed your interest in camping, moreover, you already booked a place which is in my bucket list from last two years. You would enjoy this activity as you love to spend nights under the stars so this place is going to be a perfect location for you. Chandartaal in Himachal pardesh is located in the lap of mountains, and a popular camping site for its mesmerising stargazing. In addition, such camping places in mountains always provides peaceful environment in order to get rid of chaotic lifestyle of cities for few days.

Apart from its benefits, there are some risks also associated with camping such as you will find limited resources of food, and other needs. Also, there are complete chances of the invasion of wildlife animals so prefer to go on camping in group rather than going alone.

As I already mentioned that this place is in my bucket list as well so I will also apply for holidays as per your bookings, and if in chance they will get approved then we will have a memorable trip of our life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements of a general letter. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy a camping holiday by highlighting the stunning stargazing location at Chandartaal and the peaceful mountain environment. You also describe potential disadvantages, such as limited food resources and wildlife risks, and successfully state your intention to join your friend if your holidays are approved. While all three bullet points are covered, some ideas show slight under-development, which keeps the response at this band level. For instance, the explanation of disadvantages could be expanded with more specific examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point is fully extended and supported with vivid detail throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and a logical progression of ideas. You begin with an appropriate friendly opening, move naturally into discussing the reasons for camping and its drawbacks, and conclude with your plans to join the trip. Paragraphing is used reasonably well to separate your main points. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical, relying on basic connectors like 'moreover', 'in addition', and 'also'. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional shifts in flow prevent a smoother progression. To achieve a higher score, you should use a wider variety of more sophisticated cohesive devices and ensure seamless transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic linking words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'bucket list', 'mesmerising', and 'chaotic lifestyle'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'camping in summer holidays' instead of 'your camping holiday this summer', and 'wildlife animals' instead of simply 'wildlife' or 'wild animals'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor word-choice slips occur throughout. To move up to a higher band, you need to use a wider range of precise vocabulary with greater stylistic control and natural collocation, while minimizing these lexical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'if in chance they will get approved then we will have a memorable trip'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including preposition and article usage like 'in my bucket list from last two years' instead of 'for the last two years', and 'Himachal pardesh' needing capitalization. Verb tense consistency also wavers slightly in conditional phrases. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid foundation. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over prepositions and article placement.
