Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Precious,

I hope you are doing very well. I was so excited when you told me of your thoughts about going on a camping holiday, It's your first experience and i will like to offer some advise.

After a long year of study, a summer camping holiday is sure one to relieve stress, connect with nature and most importantly relax your nerve. The activities are one to look forward to as there will be hiking, racing and a lot of fun games. This also allows you meet more people, make new friends and connections and who knows you might just come across your dream man.

An outdoor camp site sure does not come with the comfort of your home as there are limited facilities there. You will have to share bathrooms and do your laundry yourself as there is no washing machine or people to do them for you.

Let me know what you decide on as i have a couple of friends who will also be coming around and myself too so we can properly plan towards it. I will really like for you to be there and i promise it's going to be the best summer yet!

I look forward to hearing from you

Best regards,

Dorcas Fiyinfunoluwa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in the task: you explain that camping can relieve stress and offer outdoor activities, mention reduced comfort and shared facilities, and make clear that you would like to go with your friend. The friendly tone and direct invitation suit a personal letter. The disadvantages are relevant but less fully developed than the benefits; for example, you could explain how sharing bathrooms or doing laundry might affect the trip, or mention weather and insects. Your enthusiasm is clear, but the final plan is slightly unclear because you refer to friends “coming around” rather than explicitly confirming that you will join the camping holiday. Developing these points more precisely would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening, a paragraph on benefits, one on disadvantages, and a closing that invites your friend to respond. This makes the main ideas easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “After a long year of study,” “most importantly,” and “as” to connect ideas. However, some connections are a little mechanical or unclear. In the final paragraph, “as I have a couple of friends who will also be coming around and myself too” makes the arrangements difficult to follow. The benefits paragraph also moves quickly from activities to meeting people and finding a partner. Clarifying the plan and using smoother transitions between related points would strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly letter, including relevant phrases such as “connect with nature,” “limited facilities,” and “make new friends and connections.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations: “relieve stress” is more natural than “one to relieve stress,” “relax your nerve” is not idiomatic, and “offer some advise” uses the wrong form of the word. “Coming around” is also vague for describing friends joining a camping trip. Aim for more precise, natural expressions, and check spelling and word forms so that your vocabulary sounds consistently fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “After a long year of study” and the conditional-style phrase “who knows you might just come across your dream man.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, “allows you meet” needs “allows you to meet,” and “I was so excited …, It's your first experience” joins two sentences incorrectly. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “i,” and the sentence beginning “An outdoor camp site sure does not come with the comfort…” has an awkward structure. Review infinitive patterns, sentence boundaries, and capital letters; greater accuracy across these forms would make the letter more polished.
