Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Daniyal,
I hope you're doing great. I am writing to guide you regarding camping. People who have never camped before find it adventurous. Most campgrounds have hiking trails which are very fun to explore. They range from easy to hard so you can choose one according to your convenience. Secondly, camping involves unpredictability. You may prepare as much as you want but eventually you either end up forgetting something important or come across a dead end. The surprises that come with camping help us create lasting memories. Lastly, hiking trails and a few days away from the busy city life allow us to connect with nature.
However, I would warn you to be wary of the weather. Make sure you look up the weather forecast before you book the campground. Weather of Melbourne campgrounds is known to be unpredictable in summer, as a result, campgrounds are flooded or temporarily closed. Nature involves a lot of insects and mosquitos. There are some dangerous ones too. A bite can be sickening so make sure you carry an insect repellant and a medical kit.
I would love to join you on this adventure of yours. Once you have decided your dates, ring me up and we can make the plan. My experience and your inexperience in camping will make our trip a memorable one.
all the best,
Muhammad Ali Noorani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you explain the appeal through hiking, surprises and time in nature; warn about weather and insects; and state directly, “I would love to join you.” The advice is relevant and supported with practical details, such as checking the forecast and carrying a medical kit. The letter also maintains a friendly, appropriate tone. Some claims are quite general—for example, that surprises “help us create lasting memories”—and the disadvantages could be developed with a little more explanation of how they might affect a first-time camper. More specific, personal examples would make the ideas feel more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: reasons to enjoy camping, possible drawbacks, and your offer to go together. Paragraphing supports this structure, and signposts such as “Secondly,” “Lastly,” and “However” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. References to “you” and “we” also help maintain the direct, personal focus. At times, the linking is somewhat explicit or formulaic, particularly the sequence of “Secondly” and “Lastly.” The transition from the general benefits to the Melbourne weather warning is understandable but could be smoother. Varying the transitions and linking related points more naturally would make the organisation feel less signposted while preserving its clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range for a friendly advice letter, including topic-specific expressions such as “hiking trails,” “unpredictability,” “weather forecast,” and “medical kit.” Phrases such as “connect with nature” and “lasting memories” also communicate the appeal of camping effectively. There are, however, some word-choice and collocation issues that keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise and natural: “guide you regarding camping” is awkward, “according to your convenience” is not the most idiomatic fit, and “Weather of Melbourne campgrounds” is unclear. “Insect repellant” is also less standard than “insect repellent.” Choosing more natural combinations and checking spelling would improve precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
There is a good mix of sentence forms, including complex structures such as “You may prepare as much as you want but eventually you either end up forgetting something important or come across a dead end.” Most sentences are clear, and the conditional advice (“Make sure you look up the weather forecast before you book”) is handled effectively. A few grammatical and punctuation slips remain. In “Weather of Melbourne campgrounds is known to be unpredictable in summer, as a result, campgrounds are flooded,” the comma splice should be corrected by using a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction. The closing “all the best” should also be capitalised as “All the best.” Greater consistency in punctuation and sentence boundaries would strengthen accuracy.
