Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Yash,

I am very happy to know that you are planning of going on a camping holiday for the first time in this summer.

I think you are going to have a great time during this camping holiday because you have never experienced camping before. It is the best option to live near the nature because most of the camping sites are located near the river or on the mountains. It teaches us some survival skills like how to live in a tent without electricity and how to survive in an extreme weather. Therefore, it is going to be the best experience of your life.

However, there are some disadvantages of camping. Firstly, equipments we need for camping such as tent, foldable chairs are very expensive and it does not comes with any gurantee or warranty, so if you break one of these equipments then you won't be able to use it again. Secondly, tents for camping do not have any protection for mosquitoes, so you need to bring a body cream with you, otherwise you are not safe from them and sometimes it leads to dengue or malaria.

I wish, I could join you for camping but unfortunately, I am having my final exams of my college at that particular time when you are planning to go. But I hope, you will have a good time.

Kind regards,

Abhi Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three points: you explain why Yash may enjoy camping, mention disadvantages, and clearly say you cannot join because of your final exams. The reasons are relevant, especially experiencing nature and learning survival skills, and the disadvantages are illustrated with examples. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others: the enjoyment section makes broad claims such as “the best experience of your life” without explaining what Yash personally might enjoy, while the equipment and mosquito points receive more detail. The response also follows the requested letter format and tone. To strengthen the response further, develop the positive reasons with a personal detail or practical example, and make the advice more directly relevant to your friend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph explaining the benefits, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a closing that answers whether you can go. Sequencing words such as “However,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” help the reader follow the contrast and list of drawbacks. The progression is generally logical, though some linking feels mechanical, particularly the repeated numbered transitions. In the long sentence about mosquitoes, the relationship between bringing cream, being safe, and the risk of illness could be expressed more clearly. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the closing connects naturally to the invitation question. For a stronger progression, vary the transitions and use clearer links between each disadvantage and its practical consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “survival skills,” “electricity,” “extreme weather,” and “protection for mosquitoes.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and there is some attempt to use topic-specific language. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems limit precision: “planning of going” is not idiomatic, “near the nature” is awkward, and “equipments” and “gurantee” are incorrect forms. “Body cream” is also too general for the intended meaning; “insect repellent” would be more precise. The range is adequate for the letter, but greater accuracy and more natural phrasing are needed to show more flexible control. Check spelling and whether nouns are countable when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and longer structures, such as the sentence beginning “It teaches us some survival skills like how to live in a tent…” and the final sentence explaining why you cannot join. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in basic patterns. For example, “you are planning of going” has an incorrect verb pattern, “in this summer” uses an unnecessary preposition, and “it does not comes” has incorrect agreement after “does.” The sentence about equipment also shifts between singular “it” and plural items, making the reference unclear. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Practise verb patterns, subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent singular/plural reference while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
