Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Cheryl,

How are you doing? I am writing this letter regarding your interest to go for a camping holiday for the first time this summer. In the message you sent to me, you requested I give you few tips that will guide you for your next camping holiday.

Camping holidays can be quite interesting. This is because of it's educational benefit, it helps individuals develop a sence of adaptation. For example, during the last summer holiday, I went camping with my sister and we had a lot to adapt to such as sleeping in a tent rather than our usual comfortable bed and learning to asociate with new people who had the same interest. I believe going to the camp will be fun for you because of these benefits and fun activities that go on there.

There are few possible drawbacks to this. Most camps in West London are not properly fumigated, which means there are most likely to be insects that might make your stay uncomfortable. I wolud advise you go with mosquito repealants and keep your self protected.

I would have really loved to go with you this summer in other to make it worth a while but unfortunatly, my parents had already planned a vaccation for us.

I look forward to hearing your wonderful experience when you return, thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Emela.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that camping could be enjoyable because it offers learning and activities, mention insects as a disadvantage, and say you cannot join because of your family’s vacation plans. The personal example about adapting to tent life and meeting people supports your advice, and your decision about joining is clear. However, the enjoyment point is developed more fully than the disadvantages, which are limited to insects and a brief recommendation to use repellent. The opening also says your friend asked for “few tips,” although the task asks for advice on the holiday more broadly. The response covers the task well overall; to strengthen it further, develop the drawbacks with another relevant example and make the advice more specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph explaining the benefits, one on a drawback, and a closing that answers whether you can go. The progression is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example” and “I believe” help connect the explanation to your personal experience. Some links are less smooth or precise: “This is because of it's educational benefit, it helps…” joins two ideas awkwardly, while “There are few possible drawbacks to this” refers back generally rather than guiding the reader to the specific concern. The final “thank you” also feels slightly abrupt before the sign-off. More natural transitions and clearer links between claims and examples would make the cohesion more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “educational benefit,” “adaptation,” “drawbacks,” and “uncomfortable.” The camping example also gives you some useful topic-specific language, such as “sleeping in a tent.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “sence,” “asociate,” “wolud,” “unfortunatly,” and “vaccation.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “go to the camp,” “mosquito repealants,” and “make it worth a while.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they reduce accuracy and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for giving advice and describing outdoor activities; this will help you express ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “I believe going to the camp will be fun for you because of these benefits and fun activities that go on there.” Most of the message remains understandable, and you use past and future forms to describe your experience and plans. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I requested I give you few tips,” the clause needs a clearer structure, such as “I asked you to let me give you a few tips.” The sentence beginning “This is because…” contains a comma splice, and “there are most likely to be insects” has an awkward grammatical construction. Articles and possessives also need attention in “a few possible drawbacks” and “yourself protected.” More accurate clause construction and article use would improve control.
