Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Kale,

I hope you are doing well. I'm glad you asked me for advice about going on a camping for this summer. I think camping is a good cheap option than staying in hotels. Also you are more closer to the nature. This summer will be perfect for going on camping since I heard temperature will be better than last summer.

The summer camping is better option but, one of main disadvantage is the flies. It is really bad when there are flies. I would strongly recommend to get a net and face cover to cover your face. Another option would be get a strong fly spray.

I am more then happy to come long with you to camping this summer. It would be great when we both can have campsites and make fire. I know we have lot of stories to share under the fire. Let me know what you think of the plan and any places that in your mind.

Kind regards,

Thilan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in a friendly, appropriate letter. You explain that camping is cheaper, offers more contact with nature, and may suit the summer weather; you also identify flies as a disadvantage and clearly say you would be happy to go with Kale. These details make the response relevant and your willingness to join is clear. However, some ideas are only partly developed: the weather point is based on what you have heard, and the disadvantages section focuses almost entirely on flies. The advice about a net, face covering, and spray is useful, but another drawback, such as uncomfortable sleeping or unpredictable weather, could broaden the discussion. More explanation of why your friend would enjoy the experience would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening with reasons to go, a paragraph about a drawback, and a final paragraph accepting the invitation. This progression helps the reader follow your response, and phrases such as “Also” and “Another option” connect related points. The friendly opening and closing are also suitable for the audience. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “The summer camping is better option but” does not clearly signal the shift to disadvantages, and “Let me know what you think of the plan and any places that in your mind” leaves the final reference unclear. Use clearer transitions such as “However, one drawback is…” and make references explicit. This would make cohesion less mechanical and improve the flow between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “cheap option,” “flies,” “net,” “face cover,” and “fly spray.” The language is generally understandable and appropriate to an informal letter. However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems make some phrases sound unnatural, such as “going on a camping,” “more closer to the nature,” and “come long with you to camping.” “Make fire” and “under the fire” are also imprecise for describing a campsite activity. These issues limit the accuracy and flexibility of your vocabulary, even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Aim to learn common word partnerships for camping and outdoor activities, and choose more precise expressions when describing the experience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, for example, “I think camping is a good cheap option than staying in hotels” and “I know we have lot of stories to share under the fire.” The message remains understandable, and the letter includes some sentence variety. However, there are several errors in grammatical forms and sentence construction: “one of main disadvantage” needs an article and plural noun, “It would be great when we both can” uses an unsuitable clause pattern, and “any places that in your mind” is incomplete. Comparatives and articles also need attention in “more closer” and “the nature.” Practise accurate noun phrases, comparative forms, and conditional or time clauses. Greater control of these patterns would make your sentences more consistently clear.
