Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sam,
I hope you are doing well. I am happy to hear that you are going on a summer camping holiday.
You are going to have a great time of your life at camp, as I have seen you enjoy our school excursions, especially the one where we all stayed in a tent. The camp you have chosen has some picturesque views of mountains and valleys. I am sure that you are going to fill your memory card with lots of photos and videos
Furthermore, make sure to carry some mosquito repellent and blankets, as it is going to be a cold night filled with mosquitoes. There is a probability that you could encounter wild animals at the camp, such as elephants, bears or big cats. Make sure to have something to make a loud sound to scare them away.
I would like to do another camping with you after my exam preparations. We could choose a riverside in any of the northeastern states.
I hope you have a great time camping. Let me know if you need any more advice, and your availability to go camping with me.
Yours lovingly,
Abhirami

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three points and maintains a friendly, appropriate tone. You explain why Sam may enjoy the trip by referring to the school excursion and the mountain and valley scenery, then give practical warnings about cold nights, mosquitoes, and wildlife. You also make your willingness to camp together clear, although “after my exam preparations” leaves the timing slightly vague. Some ideas are less fully developed: the disadvantages are listed, but you could explain how Sam might prepare for them, and the wildlife warning could be made more realistic or specific. The response already gives relevant support for its main points; developing these details more fully and making the invitation more definite would strengthen the letter further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: opening, reasons to enjoy camping, possible drawbacks, your own plans, and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the different parts, and links such as “Furthermore” and “I hope” make the progression easy to understand. The organisation is coherent overall, though some connections feel a little mechanical, and the shift from Sam’s holiday to a future trip together could be smoother. The sentence about the camp’s scenery and filling a memory card also needs a full stop after “videos.” To improve cohesion, use a more natural transition into your invitation and make references between ideas more explicit, while avoiding unnecessary linking words.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly advice letter, including descriptive and topic-specific expressions such as “picturesque views,” “mosquito repellent,” “wild animals,” and “riverside.” These choices help convey both the appeal and risks of camping. There are also some less natural collocations and word choices: “a great time of your life” is not idiomatic in this context, “another camping” is awkward, and “a cold night filled with mosquitoes” could be expressed more precisely. “Big cats” is understandable but broad. Aim for natural combinations and precise phrasing, especially when describing experiences and practical advice; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and consistently accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex forms, such as “as I have seen you enjoy our school excursions” and “There is a probability that you could encounter wild animals.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the conditional structure is handled appropriately. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I would like to do another camping with you,” the construction needs a different grammatical form, such as “go camping again.” The sentence ending “photos and videos” lacks a full stop, and “Let me know … and your availability” would be clearer with a parallel verb structure. These are occasional issues rather than barriers to understanding; careful editing for sentence completion and parallel phrasing would improve accuracy.
