Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Riya,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to you regarding the camping holiday, which you are planning to go in this summer. I will try to give you the best advice for this camping.

To begin with, I really know you will enjoy this camping holiday because you are very fascinated towards natural beauty. The location of your camping has been quite ethereal place. Consequently, your mind will be refreshed and you will get the opportunity to escape from daily routine.

Additionally, there are some feasible disadvantages about this trip. One of them is that you are going for the first time, so it will give you difficulty for recognizing and understanding directions in the map as I know you are slighty weak in directions. You should take the guide for this trip. Furthermore, you should take some medicine and cold things as this summer has a very hot weather.

I really want to join you for the camping, however, I have to meet my cousin as she will come from London in this summer holiday. Therefore, sadly I am unable to join you for this exciting trip.

I hope your camping trip will be amazing. All the best and enjoy your holiday.

Warm wishes,

Tasbiyah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that Riya enjoys natural beauty and could escape her routine, mention difficulties with directions and the summer heat, and state that you would like to join but cannot because your cousin is visiting. The friendly opening and closing also suit the purpose of a letter to a friend. Your reasons are relevant and your position is clear throughout. To make the advice more fully developed, explain more specifically what she might enjoy doing outdoors, or how the disadvantages could affect the trip and be managed. For example, the directions concern is useful, but could be supported with a practical suggestion such as carrying a map or using a guide.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with a sensible progression from your reason for recommending camping, to possible drawbacks, and finally your availability. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “Therefore” help the reader follow the sequence. The closing is also appropriate and gives the letter a complete shape. Some transitions feel a little formulaic, and the disadvantages paragraph combines directions, a guide, medicine, and hot weather without clearly separating the ideas. You could improve flow by grouping related advice and using more natural links, while making references such as “this trip” and “this camping” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a friendly advice letter, including phrases such as “escape from daily routine,” “natural beauty,” and “exciting trip.” There are also attempts at less common vocabulary, such as “ethereal” and “feasible,” but these are not always natural in context: “ethereal place” sounds overly poetic, while “feasible disadvantages” is an awkward collocation. Other choices, including “fascinated towards” and “cold things,” are unclear or imprecise. Spelling errors such as “slighty” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, specific expressions rather than choosing formal or uncommon words simply to sound advanced; this will make your advice clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “so,” and “as,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “which you are planning to go in this summer” has an incorrect structure and preposition; write “which you are planning to go on this summer.” In “you are slighty weak in directions. You should,” the sentence boundary and spacing need correction. There are also article and phrasing problems in “this summer has a very hot weather” and “escape from daily routine.” Review articles, prepositions, and punctuation, and check that longer sentences are complete and correctly joined.
