Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Funke,

I hope you are well. I was very excited when I received the letter you sent asking for my advice concerning your thought about going on a summer camping holiday.

Anyone that has been to the summer camping holiday can testify or attest to the fact that camping holiday is an amazing experience especially during summer season like this. There are lots of fun activities to engage in. Also it exposes you to people from different areas which you may be lucky to make so many new friends, learn new languages and cultures.

Although summer holiday camping can be very interesting, it comes with some few draw backs. Be very careful to not take a walk alone especially in the eveing as there is high chances of you missing your way. Also, they sell very small quantity of food there, which if you do not place your order early you might sleep empty.

Moreso, i would have really loved to go on this summer holiday camping with you as it would have been a whole lot of fun for us. It turns out that my Dad already have plans of us travelling with him to the village.

I hope to hearing from you about your experience as it is your first time going for a summer holiday camp.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in the task: you explain that camping offers activities and opportunities to meet people, mention risks such as getting lost and limited food, and say you would have liked to join your friend but have a family commitment. The reason for your friend’s likely enjoyment is relevant, though it remains fairly general; one or two specific activities or details about what your friend enjoys would make it more convincing. The disadvantages are clearer, but the food point could be explained more precisely. Your position on joining is clear, although “would have really loved” could be made more direct and natural for a summer plan. Overall, the main content is covered, with some ideas needing fuller development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: an opening, reasons to enjoy camping, possible drawbacks, your availability, and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these distinct parts, and linking expressions such as “Although” and “Also” connect ideas appropriately. The contrast between the disadvantages and your wish to go is especially easy to understand. Some connections are less smooth: “Moreso” is an awkward transition, and the long sentence about meeting people combines several benefits without clearly separating them. The final sentence also shifts quickly from your friend’s first experience to asking for a report. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the links between related points more precise to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “amazing experience,” “activities,” “cultures,” and “draw backs.” There are also attempts at more formal or varied wording, such as “testify or attest,” but this pairing is redundant and sounds unnatural in a friendly letter. Several expressions are imprecise or awkward, including “your thought about going,” “summer holiday camping,” and “sleep empty”; these choices sometimes make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Spelling and word-form control also need attention, as in “eveing” and “Moreso.” Aim for natural collocations and a consistent conversational tone, rather than using multiple near-synonyms or formal phrases where a simple expression would be clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a conditional warning about ordering food. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “there is high chances” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “my Dad already have plans” should use a verb agreeing with the singular subject. “I hope to hearing from you” also uses the wrong verb pattern; use “hope to hear.” There are article and number issues in phrases such as “the summer camping holiday” and “some few draw backs.” Sentence boundaries and capitalization need more consistent control, including the lowercase “i.” Review agreement, verb patterns, and articles, then proofread each sentence.
