Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Zala

I hope you are doing well, fristly i am extremly happy that you finally decided to go for capming this holiday, i know it has been one of your dream to have a vacation like this. I remember the first time when i went for an adventure like this. Honestly it will be the best time of your life and there wont be a single moment that you will regret. Experiences like these help us discover more about ourself, it teaches us life skills as well as survival skills which we never thought we needed. It is life changing because you would want to do it again and again. And its not just about learning how to set up your tent, but there are so many outdoor activities like hunting, hiking, kayaking and more, not only that it is also a great opportunity to socialise and make more friends and learn new skills.

Although everything has it's pros and cons, since i mentioned the beautiful side of it in the begining i might as well share some disadvantages too. There are plety insects and musquitos in the forest, so be prepared to return with insect bites and rashes, secondly there is always a risk of attracting bears and snakes at night in majority of camp sites, be very cautious and secure your tent at night before you go to sleep. lastly do not forget to take extra lights and torches because it gets really dark at night.

I think i have covered all the important aspects which i wanted to tell you before you leave. Actually i was hoping to ask you, would you mind if i join you for camping this summer? You know i am always available for such type of adventure. Let me know what you think about it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain why camping could be enjoyable, mention disadvantages such as insects and wildlife, and ask whether you can join Zala. The personal reference to your own first adventure helps make the advice relevant, while the closing question gives a clear response to the final prompt. Your reasons are extended with examples, including outdoor activities and opportunities to socialise. Some claims, such as camping being “the best time of your life” and having “not a single moment” of regret, are rather sweeping; a more balanced, specific explanation would make the advice more convincing. Overall, the task is fully covered, with clear ideas that could be developed with slightly more precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it begins with encouragement, moves to possible drawbacks, and ends by asking to join the trip. Paragraphing supports this structure, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “secondly,” and “lastly” help signal shifts between ideas. The sequence within the first paragraph is understandable, but it becomes a long chain of points joined by commas and “and,” which makes the flow less controlled. Some transitions, including “since i mentioned the beautiful side of it,” are more mechanical than natural. To strengthen cohesion, separate related ideas into shorter sentences and use a wider range of references and transitions so the connections feel smoother rather than listed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a friendly letter, including relevant terms such as “survival skills,” “kayaking,” “insect bites,” and “rashes.” These details make the advice specific and easy to understand, and the informal tone suits the recipient. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “fristly,” “capming,” “begining,” and “musquitos,” as well as some imprecise or awkward choices such as “a vacation like this” and “such type of adventure.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of your vocabulary. Proofreading and choosing more natural collocations would help you express the same ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, for example, “Although everything has it's pros and cons” and the sentence explaining that outdoor activities offer opportunities to socialise and make friends. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. In “one of your dream,” the noun should be plural, and “Experiences like these help us discover more about ourself, it teaches us…” joins two independent clauses incorrectly and also shifts agreement. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly after sentence openings and in the long first paragraph. Aim to check subject–verb agreement, pronouns, apostrophes, and sentence boundaries, while keeping the useful variety of structures you are attempting.
