Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mehak,
I hope you are doing well. You made a great choice by chosing Banff as your camping destination for this summer. The weather there is so beautifull and cozy that it will give you a break from the cold weather you been living in right now.
There can be some possible disadvantages if you do not plan this trip right. It can start to rain a lot at this camping destination, which means that the authorities might cancle a lot of fun activities like river rafting and mountain climbing as it can cause some danger accidents. so make sure you check the weather reports before you book anything.
I would have loved to accompany you in this edventure but I cant leave my work due to the upcoming deadlines for my assignments. I wont be a part of your camping trip this time but i hope it we can plan something for next year.
Yours lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you explain that Banff’s weather and outdoor activities could make the trip enjoyable, mention rain and cancelled activities as disadvantages, and clearly say you cannot join because of work deadlines. The advice to check weather reports is also relevant. However, the enjoyment point is less fully developed: “the weather there is so beautiful and cozy” is vague, and the reference to escaping cold weather does not explain much about what your friend might enjoy doing. The disadvantages are more specific, but could include practical concerns such as insects, limited facilities, or packing suitable equipment. Develop the positive reasons with one or two concrete details to make the letter more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph about possible disadvantages, and a closing that answers whether you can go. Ideas generally progress logically, and phrases such as “which means that” and “so make sure” help connect the explanation to your advice. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of more flexible progression. To strengthen cohesion further, make the shift from the opening to the disadvantages smoother, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point. The final sentence, “I hope it we can plan something,” is unclear because the reference is faulty; revise it to “I hope we can plan something.” Consistent capitalisation after sentence breaks would also make the letter easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “camping destination,” “weather reports,” “river rafting,” and “upcoming deadlines.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “cozy” and “accompany,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context. “Cozy” does not usually describe weather, and “danger accidents” is not a natural collocation. Several spelling errors—“chosing,” “beautifull,” “cancle,” and “edventure”—are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for precise, natural expressions rather than adding descriptive words that do not fit. For example, describe the weather as “pleasant” and the activities as “potentially dangerous.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including a conditional clause (“if you do not plan this trip right”) and a relative clause (“which means that…”). The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “the cold weather you been living in,” the auxiliary is missing; write “you have been experiencing.” The modal construction “might cancle” should be “might cancel,” and “I cant leave” needs the apostrophe in “can’t.” The final sentence, “I hope it we can plan something,” has an incorrect clause structure. Review verb forms and sentence construction, and use punctuation and capital letters consistently, especially after full stops.
