Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Joy,
How have you been? I hope you are doing great. I am writing concerning your camping holiday this summer which is your first time. I know you would enjoy it.
This camping holiday would be memorable to you which I know because you would make a lot of friends at the camp and there are different fun games to be played daily.
Although there are few setbacks about camping. There are no shops or cafe around the camping site, all cafe are miles away. So while coming you need to pack some snacks and bottled water for yourself. Another setback is the issue of lightening, bring your lantern or camp torch along because once is ten pm camp light goes off except the outside bulbs.
I would have loved to go camping with you this summer but I can't make it because of my working schedules. My duties are so tight this summer. My company is preparing for its anniversary this summer, so we are working to make it a success. I would go with you next summer.
Enjoy your camping and also keep me updated.
Thanks.
Kind regards,
Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that Joy may make friends and enjoy daily games, mention the lack of nearby shops and the camp lighting, and clearly say you cannot go this summer because of work but would go next summer. This gives the letter a clear, relevant purpose. The reasons for enjoying the holiday are less developed than the disadvantages: for example, you could explain what makes the games enjoyable or why meeting other campers would suit Joy. The disadvantages are practical, but the lighting detail is somewhat unclear. To strengthen the response further, develop each point with a little more explanation while keeping the friendly tone and clear decision already present.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: greeting and introduction, reasons Joy may enjoy camping, possible drawbacks, your availability, and a friendly closing. Paragraph breaks help the reader follow these shifts, and linking expressions such as “Although” and “So” show relationships between ideas. The progression is generally easy to follow, though a few links are awkward: “Although there are few setbacks about camping” is left as a fragment, and “which I know because” makes the explanation of enjoyment less smooth. You could connect the ideas more naturally, for example by introducing the drawbacks with “One thing to bear in mind, though…” and linking the reasons for enjoyment directly to their benefits.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including relevant terms such as “camping site,” “bottled water,” “lantern,” and “working schedules.” However, several word choices or combinations sound unnatural or imprecise, which limits the range and control. For example, “setbacks about camping” would be more naturally expressed as “drawbacks of camping,” while “issue of lightening” does not clearly name the problem; “lighting” is the intended word. “All cafe are miles away” also needs a more suitable plural form and phrasing. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling carefully, especially for words that change the meaning, so your practical advice is immediately clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I would have loved to go camping with you this summer but I can't make it because of my working schedules.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. “Although there are few setbacks about camping” is an incomplete subordinate clause; it needs a main clause or a different opening. In “once is ten pm camp light goes off,” the time clause and subject are not formed correctly, and “all cafe are” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also missing or awkward articles in phrases such as “at camp.” Practise complete clauses, agreement, and article use while retaining the varied sentence patterns you are attempting.
