Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sushant,

I'm really excited to know to that you have decided to give yourself the much needed vacation, and camping sounds like an interesting idea.

I know that you've never camped before, but speaking from experience, I believe this could be your thing, considering how much you love trekking. I would suggest you go to the Lake front camp. Firstly, it is beginner friendly and secondly, the camp instructors are well equipped to deal with first time campers. I know for sure that you will have a great time there. To begin with, as my father always says, nature is the best therapist. The sense of calm you feel in nature is a great stress buster. You'd also meet new people from all walks of life. You'd get a chance to learn from their experiences and journey and have life altering conversations with them.

There are a few things that I would like you to be aware of. Don't expect the food to be great, because getting food at such high altitude is a challenging task operationally. Also carry a couple of water bottles, because even through there will be drinking water available at the campsite, the quantity of water available could be less for the number of campers there. Take a mosquito repellent, because there will me many insects and mosquitos coming out at the night. Nights could be a little cold so ensure that you carry your own blankets and do not rely solely on the items provided by the camping company.

Also, I would love to accompany you. I'll check my schedule and let you know the dates that work for me. We can then mutually decide and close the dates.

In closing, I would like to say that this could be the very first step that you would take to a lifetime of adventure and camping. Happy camping!

With love,

Surabhi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain why Sushant may enjoy camping through his love of trekking, the calming effect of nature and meeting new people; you give practical disadvantages; and you say you would like to join him. The advice is relevant and the friendly letter format, including the opening and sign-off, suits the audience. Your position is clear throughout. Most ideas are supported with useful detail, such as recommending a beginner-friendly camp and explaining the need for warm bedding. Some points are less fully developed: the food and water concerns are stated, but their likely impact or how your friend could prepare is not explored. A little more specific support for these points would make the response more consistently developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from encouragement, to possible drawbacks, to your willingness to go, and finally a warm closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, while phrases such as “Firstly,” “Also,” and “In closing” make the organisation easy to follow. You also use reference to your friend and the camping experience consistently, so the main message remains clear. At times, however, the linking is somewhat formulaic: several pieces of advice begin with “Also” or “because,” and “To begin with” does not clearly signal a new point after the earlier reasons. Varying these transitions and grouping related advice more deliberately would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less list-like.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a friendly advice letter, including relevant expressions such as “beginner friendly,” “stress buster,” “all walks of life,” and “lifetime of adventure.” These choices help convey enthusiasm and give the advice a personal tone. There are also some imprecise or unnatural combinations, including “getting food … is a challenging task operationally” and “close the dates”; these sound less idiomatic in this context. Spelling and word-form slips such as “mosquitos” and “there will me many” also affect accuracy, though the meaning remains understandable. Aim for natural collocations and precise everyday phrasing rather than formal-sounding wording where a simple expression would be clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses: “considering how much you love trekking” and “because even through there will be drinking water available…” show attempts to extend sentences. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I'm really excited to know to that” contains an unnecessary “to,” and “even through there will be” should use “though.” In “the quantity of water available could be less for the number of campers,” the comparison is awkwardly constructed, and the long sentence beginning “Nights could be a little cold” would benefit from clearer punctuation or separation. Check clause structure and proofread for small function-word errors while retaining your varied sentence patterns.
