Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear john,

How have you been? I hope everything is gooing well with you and your family. I am writing to tell you i get your messsage about you are thinking of going on holiday campeing in next your holiday, and you need information.

To begin with, camping and hiking near the mounatins or river is grate experiance, as i did 2 -3 times so i know that. You know this is best decison your are think about that. Since last year i did in with Pelnto Tours i had enjoy too much and you also will.

In addition, with tour some disadvantages is you need to share your bad sometime, like fell litlle bit crowded but in my opinion this best way to enjoy, you meet new people and spend time with them. However, do not forget spery and medicines. This things you try with your group in this summer.

Anyway, i would love to hear what you think, so write back when you get a chance. I you need any further information, Hopefully, We will be able to meet soon and catch up, properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You address the three requested points: you give reasons camping may be enjoyable, mention sharing a bed as a possible drawback, and say, “I would love” to go with your friend. However, the response only minimally develops these ideas, which limits how fully it answers the task. The enjoyment point is supported by your own experience, but “camping and hiking near the mountains or river” is not explained in much detail. The disadvantage is difficult to understand and is quickly dismissed, while the final statement about going together is indirect rather than a clear answer about this summer. Make each point explicit and add a practical detail or explanation, especially about the drawback and your availability.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, separate paragraphs for the main advice, and a closing. Connectors such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “However” help signal the sequence of ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: the paragraph beginning “In addition” moves from disadvantages to meeting people and then to spray and medicines, without explaining how these points relate. The closing also combines several unrelated phrases, making the ending hard to follow. Use one paragraph for each task point, and make references such as “This things” clear. Simpler, more direct links between ideas would make the letter easier to read.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “camping,” “hiking,” “mountains,” “river,” “crowded,” and “medicines,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors or inaccurate word choices make parts difficult to understand, such as “gooing,” “messsage,” “campeing,” and “spery.” Some combinations are also unnatural, including “enjoy too much” and “share your bad.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than adding more difficult vocabulary. For example, you could describe “sharing a tent” or “feeling crowded,” and say that you “really enjoyed” a previous trip. Proofreading spelling would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason clause with “as” and a conditional idea in “you also will.” However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and verb forms are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “I am writing to tell you i get your messsage about you are thinking” combines clauses without a clear grammatical structure, while “Since last year i did in with Pelnto Tours i had enjoy too much” has unclear tense and clause formation. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and punctuation, as in “This things.” Practise building clear sentences with one main idea, then check verb tense and subject–verb agreement.
