Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the popularity of crime media and expressing a clear opinion on its societal value. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the point about crime dramas raising awareness and pressuring governments for reform. However, some arguments could be further extended with more specific examples beyond the brief mention of 'True Detective'. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the link between the 'thrilling nature' of the content and its societal impact is explored with more depth and nuance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the reasons for popularity to the author's personal opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'First of all', and 'Secondly' are used to structure the arguments. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall flow of the essay is coherent, though the connection between sentences could be made smoother through a more varied use of linking words and better referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'stringent laws' and 'injustice', which is positive. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'making pressure' instead of 'exerting pressure' or 'awaring society' instead of 'raising awareness'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band. Expanding the range of synonyms and idiomatic expressions would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'the serious crime matters exists'), subject-verb agreement, and pluralization (e.g., 'this highly rated shows'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips that affect the flow. The writer shows an ability to construct complex sentences, but these often contain errors that prevent the writing from being considered consistently accurate. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical agreement and article usage would significantly improve the overall quality.
