Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, it has become evident that crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. I opine that crime fiction and TV crime dramas can serve both an undeniable positive and negative effect.

Starting off with the positive aspect, we cannot deny that these shows are quite entertaining. The sound tracks are well timed to become more intense when it's time for action thereby increasing the tension and adrenaline in the room. For the novels, it keeps the reader glued and eager to know the next thing that happens and just like reading any other book, the vocabulary of the readers are improved. Another positive impact of crime fiction and TV crime dramas is that it gives it's audience an idea of the dos and don'ts in certain situations. For example, I watched a crime drama one time, and the lady had been attacked in her house whilst there were other people in the same house. Her sister had heard strange sounds like that of somebody struggling but didn't bother to check it out. My take from this is to always check out anything suspicious or out of the ordinary in my surrounding.

Moving on to the negative consequences it may have, there have been cases of hedius crimes that were carried out simply because the person was fantasized by the method a criminal has used in a crime show they had watched or read about earlier. An example is an event that happened in Enugu, Nigeria in 2016, where a 26 years old boy named Chinoso had lured a 17 years old neighbor into an incomplete building in the neighborhood where he rapped and stabbed her multiple times till she died and left her body there. There have also be a case of mass shooting in the Northern part of Nigeria simply because a teenager who watches too many crime fiction found his father's gun.

In conclusion, I believe that the positive aspects of the increasing popularity of crime novels and TV crime dramas outweighs the negative because they usually include the fact that the criminals were caught and penalized and the events of imitation rarely occurs and when they do, it's usually done by people who would have committed crimes even without exposure to crime documentaries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and expressing a clear opinion. Your ideas are relevant and supported by specific examples, such as the anecdote about the crime drama and the references to events in Nigeria. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are balanced; while you provide a good range of points, the development of the 'popularity' aspect could be slightly more analytical. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Starting off with', 'Moving on to', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'it's audience' (should be 'its') and 'there have also be a case'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring precise pronoun usage would enhance the flow and cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'adrenaline', 'suspicious', and 'penalized'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'hedius' (hideous) and 'Chinoso' (likely a name, but check spelling consistency), as well as word choice issues like 'fantasized by' (should be 'fascinated by') and 'rapped' (should be 'raped'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of your ideas. To improve, focus on accurate collocations and proofreading for common spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the vocabulary of the readers are improved' (subject-verb agreement), 'there have also be a case' (verb tense), and 'the positive aspects... outweighs' (subject-verb agreement). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To move to a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures.
