Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more popular in many countries. In this essay, we are going to discuss why these books and TV shows are so popular and my opinion on the crime fiction and TV crime dramas.

Speaking about crime novels and TV crime dramas popularity, most of the people find these engaging and more interesting. This genre includes suspense, thrilling elements and unexpected twists which keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. Many writes and directors focus on stories based on real life incidents. Also most people get involved so much, they do role plays at college for safety educational purposes and few people does learn the ways to look at a crime scene to understand the motive. There are also people who turn their careers towards crime investigation department as per their own interests. These novels and TV dramas does help people in staying safe and cautious about possible dangers in society. On the other hand, there are few people who does pick up some ideas in harming others which is a negative effect on the society.

Personally, I feel that crime fiction and TV crime dramas has to be more careful while showing or describing the sensitive content. Sensor team should definitely look into these to make sure the disturbing content or visuals are being cut or trimmed. Also, writers and directors must ensure the readers or audiences feel safe and responsible. Writes and directors must hold accountability if there is any negative effect on society. For example, a director should lead the story in real-time and end it on a positive note to make sure audience leave with strong mindset about how to protect themselves during such crimes. Also writers have to make sure that the readers to stay on the positive side of the story.

In conclusion, TV crime dramas and crime novels help us to stay safe during possible dangers. However, these TV shows and books must ensure they end on a positive note to reduce the crimes in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the suspenseful nature of the genre and the potential for educational value. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that people learn to look at crime scenes from TV shows is a bit of a generalisation and could be supported with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The position is clear throughout, but the argument regarding the 'negative effect' on society is introduced briefly without sufficient exploration. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with concrete reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive (e.g., 'Also' is used at the start of several sentences). Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'suspense', 'thrilling elements', and 'investigation department'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'writes' used as a noun instead of 'writers', and 'sensor team' instead of 'censorship board' or 'regulatory body'. The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Improving the variety of verbs and nouns would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'few people does learn', 'TV crime dramas has to be', 'writers have to make sure that the readers to stay'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. Punctuation is generally functional. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical concord and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed accurately.
