Student answer (Band 7.0)

Today's generation is drawn towards fiction movies which involve crime and action. In the contemporary era, the popularity of crime novels and drama is rising day by day in various nations around the globe. However, there are a number of reasons behind this popularity which will be discussed in this essay with my opinion in the end.

On one hand, the demand for crime shows has been increasing in between the younger generation. Firstly, the story build up for crime shows is quite different as comparison to romantic novels. This is because the ending of the stories cannot be expected or guessed. However, in romantic movies the love story is bound to happen. Secondly, the human brain responds to thrillers with adrenaline which makes it even more keen for the population to follow these shows. For instance, watching a crime show and the villain is unexpected, it builds curiosity and the rush in the body. As a result, it keeps the audience keen in the show due to the unknown turns and keeps them engaged in something different from the rest of the shows.

On the other hand, in my opinion watching crime TV shows helps create awareness in society. Because crime shows such as crime patrol are made on real life stories which depicts the story on how the crime can take place even by the trustworthy people. Therefore, watching these shows helps the individuals to be aware of the similar kind of situations in the real world. On top of that, crime fiction involves action which is very hard these days to find in movies. Additionally, most of the movies made these days are based on love and friendship. Therefore, people prefer to read crime novels

In conclusion, crime shows are preferred by all kinds of generations mainly due to their story line. Although they are scary, they also bring out the true incident to the real world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the unpredictability of plots and the adrenaline rush, as well as the educational value of awareness. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about crime shows being 'hard to find' in movies is a bit repetitive and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your examples with more specific detail or nuanced reasoning to fully explore the implications of why these genres resonate so deeply with modern audiences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Therefore' and 'However'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'the true incident to the real world' in the conclusion, which lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to previous nouns would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary era', 'adrenaline', and 'curiosity'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'story build up' instead of 'plot development' or 'storyline', and 'keen for the population to follow' which is slightly unnatural. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to media and psychology to elevate your writing style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'as comparison to' (should be 'in comparison to'), 'the villain is unexpected' (should be 'the unexpected nature of the villain'), and 'depicts the story on how' (should be 'depicts how'). There are also some issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for small grammatical slips and practicing more complex sentence constructions.
