Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, crime related novels and television crime shows have attracted a wider audience in many countries. This popularity is mainly due to their engaging nature and their ability to satisfy people's curiosity. In my opinion, these shows can enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, however, they can encourage aggressive behavior, particularly in young audience, making their effects more harmful overall.

One of the primary reasons the crime shows and books have gained immense popularity is that they are more engaging and successful to meet the curiosity of audience. As crime shows usually have more suspense and they most likely disclose every secret by the end of program, keeping audience engaging. This is because people become more curious, as they are also involved in guessing secrets. For Instance, Money heist is one of the popular crime-based series, because they successfully engage the audience by involving a significant amount of suspense in their every single episode. Therefore, due to the suspense and curiosity these shows brings helps them become famous among viewers.

Although, these shows allow individuals to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills because the curiosity to find truth compelled audience to give considerable attention on even tiny details that required mental activeness, which helps improve cognitive skills, I believe it encourage aggressive behavior among audience, especially young ones. This is because, children have developing mind, whatever they see, they tend to follow, and in crime shows and books, there are many aggressive activities included, resulting in negative impact on children's overall development.

In conclusion, crime novels and television dramas have become more popular in all ages people because they involve more suspense, which helps engage audience. According to my opinion, drawbacks of crime-based stories outweigh their advantages. while it improves cognitive abilities, it can largely encourage violent behaviour among audience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant, such as the mention of suspense and cognitive benefits, though the development of the 'aggressive behavior' argument could be more nuanced. The essay is well-structured, and the arguments are supported by a relevant example (Money Heist). To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-arguments are balanced with more specific evidence or deeper analysis of the societal impact, rather than relying on general statements about children's development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the primary reasons', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with mechanical transitions, such as the use of 'Although' at the start of the third paragraph, which is grammatically incomplete as a subordinating conjunction in this context. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey ideas clearly and with some precision. You use terms like 'cognitive skills', 'mental activeness', and 'suspense' appropriately. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'successful to meet the curiosity' (should be 'successful in meeting') and 'in all ages people' (should be 'people of all ages'). While the range is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would help elevate the score. The word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'these shows brings' (subject-verb agreement), 'compelled audience' (missing article), and 'it encourage' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, the sentence starting with 'Although' is a fragment because it lacks a main clause. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of subordinating conjunctions to ensure complex sentences are grammatically sound.
