IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more popular in many countries. Many people enjoy reading these books and watching these shows. I think there are several reasons for this trend, and I believe they can be both interesting and useful.

One reason for their popularity is that they are exciting and full of suspense. People like to guess who the criminal is before the story ends. Crime stories also make people curious because they often include unexpected events. For example, many people enjoy watching detective TV series after work because they help them relax and forget about their daily problems.

However, I think crime fiction and TV crime dramas have both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, they can improve people's thinking skills because viewers try to solve the mystery. They also teach people about the importance of law and justice. In some stories, the police work hard to catch criminals, which gives a good message to society.

On the other hand, some crime shows contain too much violence. Young people may be influenced by these scenes if they watch them without guidance. Some TV dramas also make crime look exciting, which is not a good example.

In my opinion, crime novels and TV crime dramas are enjoyable if people watch or read them in moderation. They are a good source of entertainment and can teach useful lessons, but producers should avoid showing too much violence. Overall, I think they are a positive form of entertainment when they are made responsibly.
