Student answer (Band 7.0)

Crime-themed stories and movies are getting worldwide popularity. The following essay will discuss several reasons for this trend before discussing my opinion on this particular genre.

The biggest reason these criminal stories get so much fame is because they create constant suspense for the audience. It gives the viewers an aderaline rush with using high-technology graphics and music, which keeps them hooked to their screens. Moreover, the storyline and scripts are so intense and real that viewers are keen to know what happens next and binge watch every episode at once. For example, Lucifer, on Netflix, is a crime-based web series which tells different stories of crimes taking place in a town and the unique ways of catching the criminals.

However, I do believe that such stories can leave a negative impact on a person's mind, especially if the viewers are kids and young audiences aged between 10 to 19 years. Such stories can easily corrupt the brain's psychology, and they may only think from a criminal's mindset as it's harder for such ages to differentiate between reels and reality. Although, such content also spreads awareness in the society by telling various stories of victims and suggesting suitable actions to take in cases of emergencies. For instance, a popular series called 'Crime Patrol' shows the real incidents that happened with women and how they protected themselves from the molesters.

In conclusion, there are many pros and cons of consuming this type of content, and so it should be viewed in moderation without taking anything personally and always acting as a responsible citizen.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of suspense and the psychological impact on younger audiences. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why crime shows create an 'adrenaline rush' could be expanded with more depth regarding the human fascination with mystery or justice. The position is clear throughout, and the examples provided, such as 'Lucifer' and 'Crime Patrol', effectively support the arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more analytical depth rather than just stating the observation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for popularity from the personal opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the link between sentences within paragraphs is tighter to create a more seamless reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'crime-themed', 'suspense', 'binge watch', and 'molesters'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'getting worldwide popularity' (should be 'gaining') and 'corrupt the brain's psychology' (which is slightly unnatural). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions related to media and social impact, and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'with using high-technology' (should be 'by using') and 'reels and reality' (should be 'reel and reality'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'Although, such content...', where 'Although' is used as a conjunction at the start of a sentence without a following clause. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the reader can follow your arguments without difficulty. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your use of complex sentence structures and proofreading for small errors in prepositions and word forms.
