Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary era, many entertainment TV shows including crime related ones are captivating viewers eye. In this essay, I will aim to explain how human curiosity and easy accessibility are the reasons for it and why it should be consumed in moderation.

One of the main reason of the popularity of crime dramas and novels is, that this content is a source of quenching of naturally intrigued nature of human beings. Moreover, being entertaining to watch them also makes people feel updated and well-informed about their surrounding environment. For example, a popular Indian film, Dryshium, earned a substantial amount of money from Indian audience mainly, because they relate themselves to their own language, actors, places where is was filmed.

In my opinion, crime novels and dramas are a great source of instant gratification and mental stimulation that consumers often need to escape from demanding schedules. For example, various crime serial dramas are a click away on you tube that people often binge-watch to break the monotony of daily routines. However, consuming these should be in moderation, because they often contain violence scenes, may be leading to trigger anxiety or overthinking in sensitive individuals.

To summarise, modern technology played a role in satisfying the suspenseful nature of humans, that said it should be watched in moderation to avoid any mental trauma.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited due to the word count being below the 250-word requirement. While the essay presents relevant points like human curiosity and accessibility, the arguments are somewhat brief and lack depth. The example of the film 'Drishyam' is relevant but could have been expanded to better illustrate the point about cultural relatability. Because the response is under-length, it fails to fully develop the ideas, which prevents it from reaching a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For example', and 'However' are used to link ideas, though the flow is sometimes a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the brevity of the response makes the overall structure feel slightly underdeveloped. Referencing is mostly clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary era', 'instant gratification', and 'monotony'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'captivating viewers eye' (should be 'viewers' eyes') and 'violence scenes' (should be 'violent scenes'). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'One of the main reason' (should be 'reasons'), 'where is was filmed' (should be 'where it was filmed'), and 'consuming these should be in moderation' (should be 'these should be consumed'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of minor grammatical slips limits the score.
