Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's era, people around the world are attracted towards crime novels and tv crime dramas to see the ideas and thoughts put forward to create the drama. In my view, developing countries are making such shows more in number to capture larger audience and big profits.

One of the best example for books is sherlock holmes. As per the author, the main character is very intelligent to understand the crime scenes along with the reasoning provided to catch the killer. on the other hand, web series "money heist" showed that people from the different domain can use their expertise to rob the largest bank of the country. Statistics showed that people love to watch mystery series wherein the involvement of the general public is to know what happens the next.

Another perspective for getting more popularity is the big starcast where people want their favourite star to win over the evil. In my view, the crime fiction and tv crime dramas also show the real incidents happened in the life to spread awareness. The relevant example is the very famous show on indian television "the crime petrol" wherein every episode is linked with the real life incident. These shows are sometime eye opener to the society where people will be forced to take precautions before the actual incident happen.

In the end, we have seen multiple novels and shows are produced worldwide aimed to generate revenue for the personal growth as well as to develop thinking in the general public before the trap. Henceforth, there should be more number of series to be made or books to be published with good intent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation regarding 'big starcast' and 'real incidents' is relevant but lacks depth. The argument that crime shows are produced for 'personal growth' is slightly unclear in context. While the position is consistent, the supporting examples, such as the mention of 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Money Heist', are briefly described without fully linking them back to the core reasons for their widespread appeal. To improve, focus on expanding the analysis of why audiences are psychologically drawn to these genres.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices, such as 'on the other hand', 'another perspective', and 'henceforth'. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the opening of the final paragraph. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the internal structure of the paragraphs would benefit from more sophisticated signposting to guide the reader through the arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. The student uses some relevant terms like 'mystery series', 'precautions', and 'revenue', but there is a reliance on simpler phrasing (e.g., 'big profits', 'good intent'). There are also minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'different domain' instead of 'different backgrounds' and 'the crime petrol' (which should be 'Crime Patrol'). To reach a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and less common lexical items to express complex ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the largest bank of the country'), subject-verb agreement ('shows are sometime eye opener'), and preposition usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and capitalization errors (e.g., 'sherlock holmes', 'indian'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring greater accuracy in basic grammar would significantly improve the overall quality of the writing.
