Student answer (Band 7.0)

The popularity of dramas, novels and books based on crimes is skyrocketting in numerous nations in today’s era. Although a multitude range of reasons can be held accountable for the trend, from my perspective, the changing preference is the main cause of this which brings a detrimental effect to the society by providing unique methods to criminals to commit crimes.

One of the major reasons behind the high rating to crime based novels and shows is the change in the preferences of the audience. Youth prefers to watch thrilling content filled with suspense and drama. Therefore, the mind-blowing crime series with twist and turns as well as unexpected climax often excites them. To cite an example, Malayalam cinema is considered as the best cinema in India, owing to its nation-wide famous series such as Drishyam, Vash and the Officer, etc. which follow a unique concept of crime stories.

On the contrary, this trend brings deteriorating consequences to the society, in my opinion. The primary ground behind my notion is the influence on the youth. There has been several stories from India about criminal novels and TV shows used as a reference to commit deadly crimes. To illustrate, a recent case was in a limelight for a couple of months in India, showing a wife murdered his husband and sealed his body in a drum. She got influenced by a movie to plan this murder, stated in the reports of Aaj Tak newspaper. Therefore, these type of content provide ideas to commit crimes in a unique ways and prevent punishments.

Taking everything into account, I ultimately arrive at the conclusion that despite the emmence fame given to criminal stories due to the changing preferences, the negative side of this can not be ignored because of the increasing wrongful influence on youth. Hence, I suggest, the availability of these type of content should be limited to certain age groups and audience to reduce the repercussions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. You clearly state your position that these shows are popular due to changing audience preferences but argue they have a negative impact. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the reference to Indian cinema and the specific news report. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more balanced; the second body paragraph is slightly more detailed than the first. Overall, the response is well-focused and maintains a consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To cite an example', 'On the contrary', and 'Taking everything into account' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for popularity from the negative consequences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the use of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'detrimental effect', 'deteriorating consequences', and 'repercussions'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'high rating to crime based novels' (should be 'high ratings for') and 'a multitude range' (should be 'a wide range'). Additionally, there are some spelling errors like 'skyroketting' and 'emmence'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where more sophisticated and error-free vocabulary is expected.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over basic grammar, but there are several recurring errors that affect accuracy. For example, 'these type of content' should be 'this type of content' or 'these types of content'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'a wife murdered his husband' (should be 'her husband'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on proofreading for articles, pluralization, and pronoun consistency to increase the number of error-free sentences.
