Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowdays, crime thrillers are gaining attention worldwide. It can be said that people are finding their comfort in the unknown, mysterious and psychological genres more than ever. The reason for that might be hidden in several reasons which will be discussed thoroughly in this essay before presenting my own opinion.

First of all, the primary reason for the expansion of this topic are the actual crime cases across the world. As we come across severe murder cases everyday there is a factor of curiosity generated among the individuals. For example, when we study an investigation where there were numerous hints and clues which resulted in solving the murder, we tend to find this topic quite inquisitive. It provides a space in our mind to wonder the possibilities. The human mind finds this fascinating and we find ourselves eager to delve deeper into the world of myteries.

Another possibility of such kind of craze developed among people can be the profound interest in human psychology. The human brain is complex and difficult to comprehend too. Thus, TV serials, documentaries, novels which demonstrates an unimagniable crime performed by a murderer where he used his utmost mind power to do such cruelty without feeling the guilt is very interesting to know. For instance, people spend numerous hours of their day hearing the complex murder stories which are presented on the news. It is simply because there is some sort of uniqueness hidden in such cases.

In my opinion, though such novels and TV series are encouraged by lots of individuals, it is not appropriate for the society in the long run. According to me, it gives rise to more such cases where humans get influenced by others to perform such disastrous actions. I strongly believe that these kinds of telecast and novels shouldn't be allowed to publish to create a healthy society. Moreover, the content we consume is shaping our future reality should be consciously analysed by the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and a personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the human fascination with psychology and curiosity about real-world cases. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument that crime fiction should be banned is a strong claim that lacks nuanced support or counter-argument, making the position feel slightly underdeveloped. While the response covers all requirements, the depth of analysis could be improved to reach higher bands by exploring the societal impact or the nature of entertainment more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'First of all', 'Another possibility', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between 'actual crime cases' and 'inquisitive' is slightly strained. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'psychological genres' and 'complex murder stories'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'utmost mind power' and 'telecast' (which is usually used for a specific broadcast rather than the genre itself). There are also minor spelling errors like 'Nowdays' and 'myteries'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that word choices are natural in the context of discussing media and societal influence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the primary reason... are the actual crime cases') and awkward syntax ('the content we consume is shaping our future reality should be consciously analysed'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and sentence structure would significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
