Student answer (Band 8.0)
In recent years, crime-themed novels and television dramas have gained immense popularity across the globe. This widespread appeal is primarily rooted in human psychological curiosity and the desire for moral resolution. In my opinion, this trend is overwhelmingly positive as it provides viewers and readers with intellectually stimulating entertainment.
There are two main reasons behind the growing fascination with crime fiction. Firstly, these stories engage audiences through suspense and problem-solving. Unlike passive entertainment, a well-crafted detective novel or crime drama invites viewers to play the role of an investigator, attempting to piecing together clues and predict outcomes before the final reveal. Secondly, crime stories offer a reassuring sense of justice. In a complex world where real-life crimes often go unresolved, fictional narratives typically end with the culprit being caught, restoring a sense of order and fairness that audiences find deeply satisfying.
In my view, the popularity of crime drama and fiction is a positive development. For one, engaging with intricate crime plots serves as an effective exercise for critical thinking and analytical reasoning. Furthermore, it provides a safe, controlled environment for people to experience high-stakes emotions like fear and tension—a cathartic process that helps relieve daily stress. While some argue that these shows glorify violence, most modern crime fiction focuses far more on psychological motives and detective work rather than gratuitous gore, making it a sophisticated form of storytelling.
In conclusion, crime novels and TV dramas are popular because they satisfy human curiosity and provide psychological closure through justice. I view this trend favorably, as it offers a harmless, mentally engaging escape from everyday routine.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For one', and 'Furthermore', which guide the reader through your argument without feeling mechanical. The use of referencing is precise, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for popularity from your personal evaluation. The structure is coherent and supports the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary, using sophisticated terms such as 'moral resolution', 'intricate crime plots', 'gratuitous gore', and 'cathartic process'. The word choices are precise and contribute to a formal, academic tone appropriate for the task. Collocations are generally natural, and there are no significant errors in word choice. Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and varied clause types. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over punctuation and syntax is excellent. There is one minor slip in the phrase 'attempting to piecing together', which should be 'attempting to piece together'. However, this is a rare, non-systematic error that does not impede communication. Your use of modal verbs and conditional structures is accurate and adds nuance to your arguments.
