Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many parts of the world, crime novels and dramas have become more entertaining and popular. This rise in popularity can be seen across all age groups and social backgrounds. Some people consider it a reflection of society's growing interest in justice while others see it as mere entertainment. This essay will discuss the reason for this trend and present my opinion on crime-related media.

A key reason for the popularity of this genre is its ability to engage audiences through suspenseful and unpredictable storylines. For instance, many viewers enjoy trying to solve the mystery alongside the detective, which is a more interactive experience. This process provides a sense of achievement when the case is resolved. As a result, crime fiction often offers more mental engagement then others.

Another reason is that crime dramas often explore deeper social and moral issues like, justice, corruption and ethical decision making. It is illustrated as series like line of Duty not only entertain but also raise awareness of real-life challenges within the justice system. This blend of social knowledge and entertainment helps viewers connect emotionally and intellectually with the story. Therefore, such programs appeal to audience seeking both excitement and meaningful content.

In conclusion, crime fiction and crime dramas are popular because they are both intellectually stimulating and socially relevant. I believe this genre can be valuable when consumed thoughtfully and in moderation. I recommend that viewers focus on high quality productions that offer depth and insight rather than those relying solely on violence or shock value.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the popularity of crime media and your personal opinion. You have developed your ideas well, particularly regarding the 'interactive' nature of solving mysteries and the exploration of moral complexities. The position is clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more detailed; for instance, while you mention 'Line of Duty', briefly explaining how it highlights specific systemic issues would further strengthen the depth of your argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'As a result', and 'Therefore' effectively to link your points. However, the transition between the two body paragraphs could be smoother to create a more cohesive flow. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'It is illustrated as series like line of Duty' is slightly awkward and could be improved to 'This is illustrated by series such as Line of Duty'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'intellectually stimulating', 'socially relevant', and 'ethical decision making' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and punctuation, such as 'then' instead of 'than' in the phrase 'more mental engagement then others'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the score. The spelling is generally accurate, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for the formal tone of an IELTS essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which aids communication. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the missing preposition in 'It is illustrated as series' (should be 'by series') and the unnecessary capitalization of 'Duty' in the middle of a sentence. Punctuation is generally good, though ensure consistent spacing after commas. The grammatical control is solid, and the errors present are non-systematic and do not impede the reader's understanding of your arguments.
