Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more popular. I agree with this. Crime novels or TV are more entertaining and relatable.

Crime novels/Tv is more entertaining due to the suspense and thriller. It allows persons to stay glued to their screens without getting bored or falling asleep. Crime dramas have visuals which was created to keep viewers on their toes. This makes viewers to commit to more episodes and search for similar crime shows. The storyline of most crime novels or TV drama can include a robbery, police investigation or a murder. These storylines always make viewers intrigued and curious. The ability for the brain to make investigations and figure out the ending is what drives these shows to be entertaining. For instance, the movie 'How to get away with murder', has lots of suspense which keeps the viewers glued and entertained.

Furthermore, crime novels or shows are relatable. There is because it incorporates daily crimes we suffer in the society. These crimes includes, robbery, kidnapping, fraud or murder. The novel or movie gives a mental presentation or a graphical representation of these crimes and how they are carried out. It also shows how police investigations work. There are also some lessons to be learnt from these crime novels or TV shows. For instance, the TV show 'High potential' focuses on crimes, how they are carried out and ways to avoid being victims

In conclusion, crime novels or TV shows are becoming increasing popular. I agree with this. They are more entertaining and relatable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention suspense and relatability, the explanations are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'daily crimes' is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of why this specifically appeals to human psychology. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your ideas with more nuanced analysis rather than listing examples. Your position is clear, but the conclusion is very brief and merely repeats the introduction rather than synthesising your main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions are missing or awkward, such as 'There is because it incorporates...'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, using terms like 'suspense', 'thriller', and 'graphical representation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'persons to stay glued' (should be 'people') and 'becoming increasing popular' (should be 'increasingly'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'crime novels or TV shows' throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Crime novels/Tv is', 'These crimes includes') and incorrect verb forms ('visuals which was created', 'makes viewers to commit'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent throughout the essay.
