Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay attempts to address both parts of the prompt—why crime fiction is popular and the writer's opinion—the arguments are underdeveloped and lack depth. The points made, such as 'modern technology' and 'learning skills', are mentioned but not sufficiently explained or supported with relevant examples. The conclusion is brief and does not effectively summarize the position. To improve, you must expand your arguments with detailed explanations and ensure you meet the length requirement to allow for a full exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay uses basic paragraphing, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', their usage is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, making the text feel disjointed. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the overall structure lacks the necessary flow to guide the reader effectively. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus that connects logically to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, which restricts the ability to convey complex ideas. There are several instances of awkward word choices and incorrect collocations, such as 'young generation found of' (should be 'fond of') and 'layman preferences' (should be 'laypeople prefer'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient for a higher band, as it relies on basic, everyday language. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to media and literature and work on using words in their correct grammatical context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with verb tense consistency, such as 'I was watched' instead of 'I watched', and subject-verb agreement, such as 'Many people causes of watching'. Sentence structures are predominantly simple, with few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, and practicing the use of complex structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences to add variety to your writing.
