Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's opinion. However, the development is inconsistent. While the first body paragraph attempts to explain the popularity through the lens of 'educational' value regarding crime prevention, the arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. The opinion is stated but remains underdeveloped, particularly in the final paragraph, which is incomplete and trails off. To reach a higher band, you should ensure each point is fully explored with clear, logical examples and ensure the conclusion is finished to provide a sense of closure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the awkward transition 'Whenever they click on unidentified website, they will lose all many'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete final sentence. The paragraphing is present but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'keep save they accounts' instead of 'keep their accounts safe' and 'lose all many' instead of 'lose all their money'. The repetition of basic terms like 'number of' and 'crimes' limits the lexical variety. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic of media and crime, while paying closer attention to word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('number of crimes... that is increasing'), article usage ('a knowledge'), and incorrect prepositional phrases ('visit in any country'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, before attempting more complex structures.
