IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Nowadays, crime novels and television crime dramas are becoming increasingly popular in many countries. Many people enjoy reading books and watching programmes about crimes, investigations and criminals. There are several reasons for this popularity, and I believe that crime fiction can be entertaining and useful when it is presented responsibly.

There are several reasons why crime stories are so popular. Firstly, they are often exciting and keep people interested because the ending is difficult to predict. Readers and viewers want to find out who committed the crime and how the case will be solved. For example, a crime series may contain several suspects, and viewers have to think carefully about who the real criminal is. Secondly, crime stories can provide an escape from everyday life. People who have stressful jobs may enjoy watching an interesting crime drama in their free time because it helps them relax.

In my opinion, crime fiction and TV crime dramas have both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, they can improve people's thinking skills because viewers often try to solve the mystery before the characters do. They can also increase people's interest in law, police work and the justice system. However, watching too many violent crime programmes may have negative effects, particularly on young people. Some viewers may become less sensitive to violence or develop unnecessary fear about crime. Therefore, these programmes should be watched in moderation.

In conclusion, crime novels and TV dramas are popular mainly because they are exciting, unpredictable and provide entertainment. In my opinion, they can be beneficial because they encourage people to think and can teach them about crime and investigations, although excessive exposure to violent content may have some negative effects.
