Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the genre of entertainment is changing, people are taking more interest on crime books and TV shows. I believe these type of stories hold suspense narrative and have action scenes which make them popular. I believe crime stories can influence people to commit a crime.

The content delivered by crime books and TV shows attracts consumers. This is because crime stories have suspense and fighting scenes which make the stories interesting. These make viewers to complete their full stories. For example, Indian web series Kalin Bhaiya, has 6 seasons which contains fighting scenes and hold suspense narrative from beginning. Viewers watch each seasons and expecting for ending from each seasons, however they complete their story in 6th season. This show become a most watched series in Amazon Prime. Hence, content of crime books and TV shows make this genre most popular.

The main problem with these crime stories is that people get influence from this and commit a crime. Since many books and tv series glamorize criminal activities, viewers influence from these and started to act like one. For example, after watching Kalin Bhaiya series, many people started to carry weapons same like main character in that series. They started to spread their fear in their local areas and try to mimic same things which was written in novel. This explains that, crime stories and series can promote a crime which is affect negatively on the society.

To conclude, although crime books and visual content are interesting and people love to watch, these content also produce negative influence which is dangerous for society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's opinion on its impact. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the popularity aspect is explained through 'suspense' and 'fighting scenes', the explanation remains repetitive. The opinion regarding the negative influence on society is clear but lacks nuance, relying on a single example that is somewhat anecdotal. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the psychological or sociological reasons why audiences are drawn to these themes and provide a more balanced or detailed discussion regarding the potential societal consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. There is a logical progression from the popularity of the genre to the potential negative effects. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'This is because', 'For example', 'Hence'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the series mentioned and the general popularity of the genre could be more smoothly integrated. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary like 'glamorize' and 'criminal activities'. However, the range is limited, and there are instances of awkward word choices or phrasing, such as 'people are taking more interest on' (should be 'in') and 'make viewers to complete' (should be 'encourage viewers to watch'). The repetition of basic words like 'stories', 'crime', and 'series' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to demonstrate greater lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('this show become', 'these content also produce'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing ('viewers influence from these and started to act like one'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring consistent verb tense usage, particularly when discussing general truths versus specific examples.
