Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely seen that novels and TV series based on crime are in high demand in many nations. The driving factors behind this trend are their ability to create illusion and monotonous lifestyle people are experiencing these days. I believe such genre of books and dramas give enthralling experiences to the consumers and help them escape from the reality of their lives.

The wonderful facet associated with this phenomena is its ability to create illusion in the spectator's mind. It takes them away into another world where they find themselves solving the mysteries of the crime. This help the readers or the viewers to apply their critical thinking and problem solving skills while reading crime novel or watching crime TV shows. For instance, the iconic Indian TV show 'CID' was telecasted for ten years straight as it was very famous in Indian households because it engaged all kinds of audiences which felt as if they themselves were solving mysteries in the show.

Another contributing factor is that individuals these days are bored of their repetitive routines which has resulted in a monotonous lifestyle. In order to break the monotony of life, they look for something adventurous such as crime novel or shows which help them to feel adrenaline when they distract themselves in into such fiction stories.

In conclusion, while consuming crime fiction content in novels or on TV dramas makes the consumers more imaginative and sharpen their skills, it also gives them opportunity to unwind and momentarily escape from boring lives. In my opinion, this trend is fruitful and will continue in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, focusing on escapism and cognitive engagement. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the example of 'CID' is specific, the explanation of why people enjoy the 'adrenaline' or 'illusion' could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To improve, ensure that the connection between the 'monotonous lifestyle' and the specific appeal of crime fiction is more thoroughly articulated with additional supporting details or broader societal context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main reasons for the popularity of the genre. Cohesive devices such as 'The wonderful facet associated with this', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts, which could be more precise. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You have used some good collocations like 'critical thinking', 'problem solving skills', and 'monotonous lifestyle'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'create illusion' (should be 'create an illusion') and 'distract themselves in into such fiction' (which is awkward and grammatically incorrect). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'This help the readers' should be 'This helps', and 'such genre' should be 'such a genre'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage ('the monotony of life' is correct, but 'in into' is a redundant preposition error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
