Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation regarding why these shows are popular relies on general statements about 'thrilling experiences' and 'suspenseful music' without providing concrete examples or deeper analysis. The personal opinion is stated but lacks depth, focusing on the idea that these shows teach 'escape techniques' or 'caution,' which feels slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, the writer should provide more specific examples of why these genres appeal to human psychology or societal interests.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly,' 'Moreover,' 'Similarly,' and 'To conclude,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'There are various reasons established with this phenomenon.' Additionally, some referencing is unclear, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended subjects.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'more number of crime shows,' 'greater thrilling and suspense experience,' and 'umpteen number of nations.' The writer attempts to use more sophisticated vocabulary, but it is often used incorrectly or in a way that sounds unnatural. To improve, the student should focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that words are used in the correct context rather than relying on repetitive or slightly misused phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'This will essay will delve,' 'people who watch these episodes or movies due to obtain,' and 'these media’s use.' There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The writer should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
