Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, TV crime shows and crime novels are becoming more popular in many nations. This essay will discuss the possible reasons behind this trend along with my opinion.

To commence with, there are plenty of reasons behind the popularity of crime shows and novels. The primary reason is people's interest. In this modern era, individuals prefer to watch violence instead of non-violent fiction movies. About a decade ago, children used to watch cartoons and preferred to listen fairytale stories. Now, it is often seen that teenage take more interest in crime series and books. To add to it, crime rate in some countries is more than others. So, crime novels and dramas are act as platform to create the awareness among people.

In my opinion, this trend has both merits and demerits. If talk about merits, through novels and dramas, people get to know what kind of crimes are happening around them. On the other hand, it is often said that children learn what they see. So, excessive crime content will cause negative impact on child's mental health. To add to it, by watching crime dramas , people think that it is really easy to commit crime. Sometimes, they take ideas from dramas and novels to commit the crime. For instance, recently in India women killed her husband and buried his body in her home. After investigation, she confessed that she took the idea from CID crime drama.

In conclusion, although the main reason behind the popularity of crime dramas and novels is people's interest but there should be a limit on such kind of content. There should be a balance between violent and non-violent content.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the thrill of violence and the potential for negative social influence. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the claim that crime dramas act as a platform for awareness is mentioned but not fully explored or supported with clear logic. The opinion is clear, but the arguments regarding the impact on children and the imitation of crimes could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is adequate but lacks depth in its analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the connection between the popularity of crime shows and the specific example of the Indian crime case is slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the personal opinion, which helps the reader follow the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'merits and demerits' and 'investigation'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'listen fairytale stories' (should be 'listen to fairy tales') and 'are act as platform' (should be 'act as a platform'). These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the range and precision of the language used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the crime rate', 'the idea'), subject-verb agreement ('teenage take', 'women killed'), and sentence fragments ('If talk about merits'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the writer's point. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
