Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nations, it has been noticed that TV shows and novels related to crime are becoming increasingly popular. The main reason for their popularity is the amount of thrill and excitement, they are providing. Many people prefer to watch crime stories such as robberies or murder cases over comedy or Sci-fi, because they are made on real events and provide real facts.

Individuals are more interested in crime based content because it is more entertaining as compare to other categories. As such content provides much more thrill, suspense, and better story formats. However, comics and action movies are presenting the same stories from last few years, which causes less excitement among the audience. By watching crime and robbery documentaries, individuals may educate themselves on various topics. For instance, the documentary related to the issues behind economic crisis of 2008 is widely loved by individuals all across the world, because it educates people regarding finance.

Conversely, other categories of novels and movies are also essential, because kids prefer to watch and read stuff related to superheroes, cartoons and science. Similarly, senior citizens love to watch old movies, books and articles. The stuff related to crime mostly fascinates the young generation. As entertainment companies need to make content for every age group, in order to stay profitable and serve the maximum population.

To conclude, crime based writings and movies are being loved all around the globe, due to their interesting and compelling story line. While producing similar type of content in other categories can cause boredom. Nevertheless, companies should keep producing content for kids and seniors, in order to sustain economically.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The explanation for popularity focuses on 'thrill' and 'real facts,' but the argument regarding the 2008 economic crisis is slightly tangential to the genre of 'crime novels and TV crime dramas.' The personal opinion is present but could be more explicitly stated and integrated. While the ideas are relevant, they lack the depth required for a higher band, as some points, such as the mention of comics and cartoons, distract from the core focus on crime fiction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In many nations,' 'As such,' 'Conversely,' and 'To conclude,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the shift from discussing crime content to the 2008 economic crisis lacks a strong logical bridge. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for popularity from the discussion of other genres.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language like 'suspense,' 'story formats,' and 'compelling.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'made on real events' instead of 'based on real events' and 'stuff related to' which is too informal for an IELTS essay. More precise synonyms would elevate the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are recurring grammatical errors. For instance, 'as compare to' should be 'compared to,' and there are punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma in 'excitement, they are providing.' Subject-verb agreement and article usage are mostly accurate, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. The errors present do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band.
