Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is an undeniable fact that, nowadays crime rate is increasing day by day at an alarming rate and need an immediate action to resolve this issue. However, in most of the nations, individuals prefer to watch more crime dramas and crime novels. They are enormous reasons behind this phenomena that I will explain in the upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with the causes, Firstly, crime drama hold more suspense and action scenes that attract people to watch that kind of shows. Another thing is that, some individuals think that reading a novel that is based on crime help masses to understand the reason why people commit crime such robbery, kidnapping to earn hefty amount of money in a shorter period of time and run an awareness campagin to reduce it.

Moreover, these days lots of crime series are done by famous actor and actress who have million of fan following that is another factor to increase their popularity level in contrast to another shows.

According to my point of view, no doubt these shows assist individual to enhance their knowledge level regarding the crime sections and punishments but the government should also applied few restrictions on the these show so that no teenagers can access these shows try to imitate it to fulfill their needs.

In the summation, although people admire these shows because of their interest and favouritism but it need strict rules and regulation to maintain a healthy and crime free society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and your personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about 'awareness campaigns' is not clearly linked to why people enjoy the genre as entertainment. Additionally, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of your arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure you expand on your points with more specific examples or logical explanations. The position is clear, but the overall development is limited by the brevity of the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In the summation'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. For instance, 'In the summation' is not standard phrasing; 'In conclusion' would be more appropriate. The logical flow between sentences is generally clear, but the transition between the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion could be smoother. Paragraphing is present, but the ideas within them could be better connected to create a more cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic terms like 'big' or 'good' implicitly through repetitive structures. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'crime series are done by famous actor' (should be 'star' or 'feature') and 'applied few restrictions' (should be 'apply'). While you attempt some topic-specific vocabulary like 'awareness campaign' and 'punishments', the range is limited. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express your ideas more fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'crime rate is increasing... and need an immediate action' (missing subject 'it'), 'that kind of shows' (should be 'those kinds of shows'), and 'no teenagers can access these shows try to imitate it' (missing conjunction or relative pronoun). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. Increasing the accuracy of your complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
