Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, crime novels and TV crime dramas are popular. Not only today but from generations, people have a keen interest in crime dramas.
Usually, people like suspense and crime dramas gives that hint to the viewers/ readers. I personally like crime fiction because I can imagine as I read. A famous author, Agatha Christie, is my favourite. She defines the character so well that sometimes the trauma shown to the character is quite relatable. As the story progresses, the excitement of knowing what happened next and how the crime was solved gets you involved in the whole scenario. You try to connect the dots, try to read the criminal's psychology, and solve the case on your own. You predict what will happen next, and if that turns out the opposite, or different from what you imagined, that excites you even more, and you feel challenged for your mental ability.
TV dramas, on the other hand, are good for people who are less likely to be good at imagination, or they don't like reading books. They immerse themselves in the visuals and enjoy the backgroud music as well to feel the vibe of the scene. If they see the TV dramas where thier favourite actors are playing the role, they enjoy it more.
In conclusion, wiether it is a TV drama or Crime fiction, people enjoy the suspense and get surprised for what can't even imagine.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. However, the development is limited, and the essay falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the depth of the response. While you provide some reasons for the popularity of crime fiction (mental challenge, suspense) and TV dramas (visuals, music, actor appeal), the ideas are not fully extended. The under-length nature of the essay means that the discussion remains somewhat superficial, preventing a higher score. To improve, ensure you expand on your points with more detailed examples or analysis to meet the word count and provide a more comprehensive argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each medium, and a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, the transition between ideas relies heavily on simple connectors like 'and' or 'also'. There is some attempt at logical progression, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is present, but the overall structure feels a bit disjointed due to the brevity of the content. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a clearer progression of ideas would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'suspense', 'psychology', 'immerse', and 'scenario'. However, there are some inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'backgroud' and 'wiether'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. You tend to rely on common phrasing rather than more precise collocations. To increase your score, focus on using a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary and ensure that your spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As the story progresses, the excitement... gets you involved'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('crime dramas gives') and awkward phrasing ('people who are less likely to be good at imagination'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is occasionally repetitive. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical slips and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures.
