Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 160 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay attempts to address the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and provides a personal opinion, the discussion is superficial and lacks the necessary depth and supporting detail required for a higher band. The conclusion is incomplete, consisting of only a sentence fragment. To improve, you must expand your arguments with more detailed explanations and examples, and ensure the essay is fully developed and concluded.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is limited by the brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'furthermore', but they are sometimes used mechanically. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of a proper conclusion disrupts the overall flow of the argument. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words to connect ideas more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by well-developed supporting points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'lawbreaking novels' (instead of 'crime novels') and 'violence dramas' indicate a limited range and some inaccuracies in word choice. There is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. To improve, try to incorporate topic-specific collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. For example, instead of repeating 'crime' or 'dramas', use terms like 'thrillers', 'detective fiction', 'suspenseful narratives', or 'genre'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('people really likes', 'their is a show') and awkward sentence structures. There is a limited range of complex structures, and the errors occasionally make the text difficult to follow. Punctuation is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Practice writing more complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions, but ensure they are grammatically accurate.
