Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, ending abruptly at 223 words. This significantly impacts the development of the ideas. While the essay introduces the topic and attempts to address both parts of the prompt—reasons for popularity and personal opinion—the conclusion is incomplete, and the arguments are underdeveloped. The discussion on why crime dramas are popular is somewhat repetitive, focusing mainly on 'taste and preference' without exploring deeper psychological or societal factors. The personal opinion section is present but lacks sufficient depth and supporting evidence to fully satisfy the task requirements. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are explored in detail and complete the essay with a coherent summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'First and foremost', and 'Secondly', which help organize the flow of ideas. However, the progression is interrupted by the incomplete conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is cut off, which disrupts the overall structure. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical development of ideas is hindered by the lack of sufficient length and the abrupt ending. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that the essay concludes logically, providing a sense of closure to the arguments presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'create only those content which the public most respond' and 'turn them into the crime offences'. While the meaning is generally clear, the word choice is often repetitive and lacks sophistication. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary related to media and sociology. For example, instead of 'big chunks of money', use 'lucrative revenue streams'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include missing articles ('majority of the people', 'in today's world'), subject-verb agreement issues ('there are number of reasons', 'these kind of shows'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules, particularly article usage, pluralization, and sentence construction. Proofreading for common slips would also help increase the accuracy of the writing.
