Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, crime novels and TV crime dramas have become a common part of daily life. Many adults and teenagers spend a large amount of time watching them because they are highly entertaining. I think crime fiction is popular mainly because it combines entertainment with suspense and encourages people to pay attention to details. I believe it can be useful when watched in moderation, but excessive viewing is definitely harmful.

One the one hand, People enjoy mystery and suspense because it provides excitement and a break from daily routines. Crime fiction is more engaging than ordinary dramas because people want to know who committed the crime and how it happened. For example, Netflix series about world richest drug load "EL Chapo", contains lot of suspense how he became a famous criminal. It generates curiosity among people to learn about unusal cases without experiencing danger themselves. In addition, Streaming platforms have made crime dramas available anytime and social media platforms promote such series. Recently, Mirzapur Season 3 trailer has released which became famous worldwide in just few seconds.

In my opinion, These TV dramas are quite entertaining and help people to learn a lot of skills such as developing analytical thinking and attention to details. It has a positive impact when they are watched in moderation, it can inspire you people who want to pursue their careers in the Police and the Army because these stories are made up on the real character who committed that crime. However, Excessive violence can negatively affect some viewers, it can cause a concern. For example, Nowadays some people who are not mentally stable they are repeating the same crime such as getting influenced by breaking bads series and starting creating drugs by their own, which is dangerous for the society.

In Conclusion, Crime fiction can help people learn many skills and develop themselves, but It has negative side also which can put some individuals into danger. Some people get influenced in a wrongly manner. I believe people should watch this in moderation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and expressing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the appeal of suspense and the potential for analytical skill development. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The example regarding 'El Chapo' is a bit informal and lacks sufficient depth to fully support the argument. The discussion on the negative impacts is a good attempt at a balanced view, but the connection between watching crime dramas and committing real-life crimes is a significant over-generalisation that lacks nuanced support. To reach a higher band, ensure that examples are more academic in tone and that arguments are explored with greater logical depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. There is a progression of ideas from the reasons for popularity to the personal opinion and the potential downsides. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'On the one hand', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing or punctuation errors. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'suspense', 'analytical thinking', and 'streaming platforms'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'world richest drug load' instead of 'drug lord', and 'in a wrongly manner' instead of 'in a negative way'. Some phrasing is repetitive, and the student relies on basic descriptors. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid informal phrasing when discussing serious topics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('trailer has released'), article usage, and punctuation (comma splices). For example, 'Nowadays some people who are not mentally stable they are repeating...' is a run-on sentence that lacks proper structure. While the student attempts complex sentences, these often contain errors that slightly impede the flow. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence boundary punctuation would significantly improve the clarity and quality of the writing.
