Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why crime fiction is popular and the writer's opinion. However, the development is limited. The explanation for popularity relies heavily on the 'real-world' aspect, but the reasoning is somewhat repetitive. The opinion is stated in the conclusion but lacks depth; it focuses primarily on the educational value of crime stories without exploring the entertainment or psychological appeal. The ideas are relevant but remain at a surface level, lacking the depth required for a higher band. The response is just over the minimum length, which restricts the ability to fully expand on the arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'As result' and 'on other hand' are missing articles or prepositions. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, such as the jump from social media habits to the conclusion. While there is a logical progression, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the occasional awkward phrasing make the flow feel somewhat disjointed. Paragraphing is present, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety and precision.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. The writer uses basic terms like 'story idea', 'things happening', and 'making it interesting' repeatedly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'blockbuster' and 'depicting', but these are often used in slightly unnatural collocations. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To improve, the writer should focus on using more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include missing articles ('in format of instagram reels'), incorrect verb forms ('youngster... are now more social'), and punctuation errors. Some sentences are fragmented or lack proper subject-verb agreement, such as 'writer are depicting'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors interfere with the fluency of the text. The range of structures is limited, and the writer struggles to maintain accuracy when attempting more complex sentence constructions.
