Student answer (Band 5.5)

In considerable number of nations nowadays, the popularity of crime movies genre invades the world. Most of the people prefer these kind of movies and novels because they love to investigation and the stimulating events. In my opinion, I would argue that these types of genres are worth to be watched.

Crime movies and dramas that investigate crimes are becoming more likely to appeal to most of individuals around the world, as people would rather to escape from the stressful working life into a mood of investigation and critical thinking trying to find the truth behind crimes who, how, when the criminals commit the crime. For instance, Sherlock Holmes movies are the best and the most stimulating crime fiction ever made, they capture your attention from the first moment in the movie, and make you think deeply about the events in order to find the criminals.

I would argue that these types of arts are extremely significant to everyone, as they help people to strengthen their critical thinking abilities which will aid them in real life situations such as at work, school or even dealing in any social gathering. Moreover, watching these crime movies will enhance stronger ties between family members, as they watch the movie together and analyse it. For example, most of families in Egypt gather around in order to spectate crime movies together and have fun.

To conclude, crime fictions and TV crime dramas are well-liked by a large number of people, and I see that they are not only serve entertainment purposes but also they work on gathering people together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the appeal of critical thinking and the social aspect of shared viewing. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the claim that crime dramas strengthen critical thinking in real-life situations is stated but not fully explored or exemplified with depth. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting arguments could benefit from more specific elaboration to reach a higher band. The response is balanced, but the analysis of why these genres are popular remains a bit generic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'To conclude', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with sentence-level flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the argument without difficulty, meeting the requirements for a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choice, such as 'invades the world', 'love to investigation', and 'spectate crime movies'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the student struggles with collocations. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that word forms (e.g., 'investigation' vs 'investigate') are used correctly in context. The current level is sufficient for communication but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'these kind of movies', 'worth to be watched', and 'crimes who, how, when'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are also inconsistent. While the student attempts complex sentences, the control over these structures is limited, leading to errors in syntax. The punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic sentence construction and proofreading is needed.
