Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is no doubt that the content related to crime such novels and dramas, is getting more popular among individuals. There are variety of reasons behind this trend and I personally believe that watching and reading crime content has more disadvantages than advantages.

Why people prefer to read and watch detective criminal activities, depends on multiple factors. The first and foremost the psychological curiosity and thrill that individual are always fascinated by the crime content, as they start imagine themselves, the hero of the story. Moreover, It helps them to get engaged with the particular movie and book to solve the story which attracts their more interest towards this type of content. For example, The report from Oxford University in 2020, showed that 50% individuals who have keen interest in problem-solving, their main content of reading and writing is Crime. Due to this, most of the people express their interest detective activities.

Despite having plenty of reasons, there are some detrimental effect which can't be overlooked. Firstly, the crime novels and Tv shows makes people feel sacred even their own neighborhood which leads to paranoid and unsafe situations. Secondly, It adds different mindsets toward police as they watch in movies that police can solve any case within few hours, It's not true any real life. Not only this, Sometimes youngsters can also inspired from this dramas because in many TV shows , the criminals look cool and they live luxury life which leads to negative effect on the viewers mindset.

To conclude, this phenomenon is getting popular due to many reason such as fun activity, but it could lead to many complications in the viewer's life. That's why, I opine that watching and reading of the criminal content has more drawbacks than positives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the popularity of crime content and your personal opinion. You maintain a clear position throughout, arguing that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'psychological curiosity' is a good start but could be expanded with more depth. The example provided regarding Oxford University feels slightly forced and lacks specific context. To improve, ensure that your supporting arguments are fully explored rather than just stated, and provide more nuanced reasoning to reach a higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the popularity of crime content and the specific psychological reasons. The use of cohesive devices is adequate but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental effect', 'paranoid', and 'phenomenon'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'detective criminal activities' instead of 'crime fiction' or 'true any real life' instead of 'true in real life'. Additionally, there are some minor spelling and grammatical slips, such as 'sacred' instead of 'scared' and 'inspired from' instead of 'inspired by'. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and refining your use of academic vocabulary to ensure precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('crime novels and Tv shows makes'), missing articles ('in many TV shows'), and awkward phrasing ('the report... showed that 50% individuals'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence structure will help you improve.
