Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people are leaning more towards reading crime novels and consuming TV crime dramas. I strongly believe that in recent years, more people are favouring watching movies and TV series which are based on crime stories. This essay will examine how suspense and connection with real life stories have contributed to this trend.

Firstly, the major contributor is an element of suspense related to crime dramas. It hooks people with the screen play, dialogue delivery and additional sound effects and lighting. People wants to see movies and series which has suspense compare to watching family drama and romantic movies. Also reading a crime novel, gives you direct exposure and thrill of being as a main character compare to reading a novel based on a renowned scientist.

Secondly, crime dramas are based on real life stories. New movies are made on stories which are full of effects, excitement and thrills. Also, people can learn from this stories and follow the learnings in their life. Movies and novels starts from the beginning and unfolds at the end. It also shows us potential ways by we could be harmed and how we can protect against it. A recent study published by Oxford University has shown that watching and reading crime dramas has helped mind to identify potential threat 20% more quickly.

In conclusion, many viewers from around the globe are following crime dramas. Main reasons are unthinkable suspense at the end. Second is seeking learning from real life stories compare to watching a family drama movies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention suspense and real-life connections, the explanations remain superficial. For instance, the claim that crime dramas help people identify threats is an interesting point, but it lacks sufficient elaboration to be fully convincing. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main idea is supported by a clear, logical explanation or a more detailed example. Your position is clear, but the overall depth of the argument is basic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the internal cohesion within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this stories' (should be 'these stories'). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, but it is somewhat repetitive and lacks precision. Phrases like 'leaning more towards' and 'full of effects' are functional but not sophisticated. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'unthinkable suspense' (which sounds unnatural; 'intense' or 'gripping' would be better) and 'dialogue delivery'. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to media and psychology to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('People wants', 'Movies and novels starts'), incorrect preposition usage ('ways by we could be harmed'), and article errors ('the learnings'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and pluralisation would significantly improve your accuracy.
