Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is clearly seen that a lot of countries across the globe, people are getting more inclined towards novels and TV dramas which showcase some crime scene inside it. This essay will focus on the reasons why such popularity of criminal novels and TV shows are among the people as well as my opinion on this popularity.

There are a lot of reasons for the preference towards crime related stuff. The main reason is awareness as they see a lot different in the news and on social media platforms that such a crime has happened on a place, people after reading or watching those try to protect themselves so that same thing should not happen with them. It is also noticed that criminals themselves took the inspiration from certain books or shows so to be at a safer side and keep themselves alert they are regularly getting in touch of it

In spite of this such kind of books and shows helps there mind to grow as they wish to find the criminal before the suspense revealed for such a hunt to need to think in all the ways. Not only it sharpen the mind but it is also a source entertainment as one can feel relax after a hectic schedule. Moreover, it also enhance the family bonding as everyone watch the TV shows together.

In my opinion, it is quite nice to be aware about what is happening in our surrounding so that if certain situation appears one could deal with it without any fear.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument that criminals take inspiration from shows is mentioned but not clearly explained or linked to the general popularity of the genre. The opinion section is quite brief and lacks depth, failing to fully explore the implications of consuming crime fiction. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed examples and ensure your arguments are fully extended rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between ideas is often mechanical. Phrases like 'In spite of this' are used incorrectly to introduce a new point rather than a contrast. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed, such as the transition between the news/social media point and the idea of criminals taking inspiration. Using a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'on the other hand') and ensuring they are used logically would significantly improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inclined', 'suspense', and 'hectic schedule'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'crime related stuff' (too informal), 'showcase some crime scene inside it', and 'before the suspense revealed'. These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly unclear. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding vague terms like 'stuff' or 'things'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of your writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('criminals themselves took the inspiration'), missing articles ('on a place'), and awkward phrasing ('as they see a lot different in the news'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage.
