Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of suspense and the thematic exploration of justice. However, the development is somewhat limited; the points are introduced but not fully extended with deep analysis. For instance, the mention of 'patriotism' and 'life lessons' is a bit vague and could have been better supported with concrete examples. The position is clear throughout, but the overall depth of the argument remains at a basic level, which is characteristic of a Band 6 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Forothermore' and 'Prior to my stance'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences can occasionally feel disjointed due to the limited variety of linking words. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points, which helps the reader follow the argument despite the minor issues with cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'mysterious twists' and 'adversely affects', but there are also frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'strenth', 'putriotism', 'charactor', 'bileve', 'soctiy', 'justic'). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate more consistent accuracy in spelling and a wider range of precise, topic-specific collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'suspense which make', 'it also keep', 'directors are prefer') and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentence fragments and missing commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors means that the writer does not consistently maintain error-free sentences, which is a requirement for higher bands.
