Apart from that, crime dramas use various latest technologies and detective methods for finding victims, which ultimately encourage individuals to watch full show. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and expressing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While the popularity section is supported by an example (CID), the argument regarding the negative impact on society is a bit generalized and lacks specific evidence. The position is clear, but the link between watching crime dramas and the actual commission of crimes is asserted rather than logically argued, which limits the depth of the response. To reach a higher band, ensure that arguments are fully extended with more nuanced reasoning rather than relying on broad generalizations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Apart from that', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or the referencing is unclear, such as the sentence starting with 'Which ultimately results in...'. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel a bit repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the logical links between the popularity of the genre and the societal impact could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'critical-thinking', 'problem-solving', and 'proactive measures'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'entertainment source' (should be 'source of entertainment'), 'worsen impacts' (should be 'worsening impacts'), and 'commiting offence' (should be 'committing offences'). The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('it contain', 'novels contains', 'it have worsen impacts') and article usage ('the society', 'the community'). Some sentences are fragmented or lack a clear subject, such as the opening sentence which lacks a main verb. Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these grammatical slips occasionally distracts the reader. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear, complete structure.
